Over the last decade social media has been as much a part of the radio job as what you speak into the mic and I have learned from some of the most highly paid consultants in the field as to how to get the best engagement on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and even Foursquare.
Remember Foursquare?
In 2012 I was part of the team who took the Q107 Toronto Facebook page from a few thousand likes to over 300,000 in a six month period.
This involved creating one piece of creative, compelling, engaging content for each hour of the show each day. I managed to tie a lot of this into on air content.
For example, I had the silliest contest ever: How Many Fingers. I would ask listeners to look intensely at their radio and guess how many fingers I was holding up, then call up with their answer. First person to guess correctly got concert tickets. I would reveal the answer via a photo on the Facebook page, ensuring the perfect crossover between native product and social networking.
